Why spend a ridiculous amount of money when you can make things your own with less money! … I realized how expensive a simple sugar or salt container can be and the worst part of it was that I didn’t even like them that much. Well, I decided to buy plain containers at Michael’s for $2 and customize them to my liking. As you probably have already noticed, now a days, chalk paint is the thing to use, so I wanted to give it a try.
I admit, I made a few mistakes, but that is part of the process. It clearly states on the chalk paint bottle that you have to wait 24 hours for it to be ready or to add another coat – Ha! I guess I was too exited the first time to read the instructions… but I got it right the second time! and the outcome was great. I love it!
I tried show the process step by step but I will elaborate…
First you have to clean the containers and dry them very well. Then you use the blue tape to make the desired shape (make sure the tape is sticking properly to the container). I chose to do squares because I wanted it to be as uniform as possible, and it is also easier. After that, apply the first coat of chalkboard paint and wait 24 HOURS. I only did one coat but if you think you need a second one, go right ahead. Just make sure you wait another 24 hours. When the paint is completely dry, carefully pull the blue tape and with a razor clean the corner and the excess paint. You can decorate it a little more with any acrylic color paint – Dots is always the easiest FYI. For writing, I bought chalk markers! they are super easy and clean to use. If you make a mistake you can clean it right off with water an a cloth.
I wanted to do this DIY project for the longest time. Now that I did it, I am excited for you to try! Be creative and Have fun!
